About the work
Ameisenhaufen ( Tr: “Anthill” ) was painted by Marianne von Werefkin likely in St. Prex near Lausanne around 1916. Her work shows influences from Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Edvard Munch, the Nabis group and Symbolist movements. With strong colouring and depiction of toiling faceless workers dominated by the landscape the artist conveys tension. With its title – Anthill – she is perhaps commenting on their plight. Ameisenhaufen was made against the background of The First World War. In a time of great uncertainty and devastation the questioning of life’s meaning and its fleeting nature preoccupied artists. By depicting a seemingly simple rural scene in such a symbolic manner the artist brings home to us a powerful message.
The giclée process is ‘the best kind of fine art print available today’ and uses precision digital technology. Giclée prints are favoured by leading international museums and fine artists for their superb quality in reproduction. The prints are rich, detailed and with saturated colour – these prints are often mistaken for originals.
As with any work of art we recommend displaying your print away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
